Wellness coach, mental health therapist, kickboxing instructor. These are just a few of the things that Rana walker is.
The one running theme in all of her various occupations, however, is healing and helping people. With a B.S. in Psychology from Howard University, her initial intention was to be a doctor. But while doing her post-bac, Rana realized that she was already equipped to heal people in another way.
"I come from a family of healers," says Rana. Her family has always been putting together different venues that deal with wellness of the mind, body and spirit, and figuring out purposes of life. Thus she realized that this, alternative healing, was to be the answer to her calling of healing people.
Diamond Cutter LLC (diamondcutterllc.com), a mobile wellness company run by Rana and her mother, Gerri Walker, is the result. Diamond Cutter was formed to formalize the process of healing people that were so natural in her family, and also to impact people in a larger scale. The name Diamond Cutter was Inspired by her father's insight that "each of us is faced with the same challenge as the diamond cutter: To bring forth inherent strength and beauty despite the presence of flaws." The company officially launched in 1999 at the 14th Philadelphia International Art Expo, under "The Art of Living Well," wellness expo. The company assesses individual or corporate clients and sets up customized wellness programs according to their needs. These programs are designed to enhance mind, body and spirit, and thus include activities that cover all those areas; mind-enhancing activities such as counseling, physical activities such as kickboxing, yoga, or water rafting, and spiritual activities like meditation, to better listen to oneself. "We've been trained to think that all of the answers are outside, when all the answers are really within. You just have to tap into your soul," says Rana.
Rana credits her parents for leading her to have such perspective on life. She has traveled much and lived in Ghana for 9 years when she was younger. "It really opened my eyes. Really seeing that there are people all over the planet, and seeing their different lives, beliefs, values, different sights and sounds...it makes you realize what is important in life, that it really is about the quality of life than the quantity."
Her presence as a Life Coach on NBC's Starting Over is just another way of her reaching out to people, but in a way that reached even wider and greater number of audience through the medium of TV. In Starting Over, six women who all want to start over in one area of their lives, live together in one house. "You can see the shift in the women, the resistance, and the change," says Rana. All of the women she worked with has graduated from the house with successful changes in their lives. Rana enjoyed the experience immensely, and she continues to find new and creative ways to help people; healing and achieving wellness is "a continual process, not a quick fix."
