Herman Bigham & Associates
HERMAN
BIGHAM AND ASSOCIATES is a collective of primarily African Art presenters,
Preservers & Scholars. Over three hundred thousand viewers in nine
cities nationally have enthusiastically welcomed our exhibitions of rare
and authentic African sculpture. We
produce superior quality educational exhibitions of traditional African sculpture
that have a contemporary social relevance. The
unifying theme of all our exhibitions is to emphasize the original intent
of African Sculpture as a visual means of perpetuating values, social order,
stability, and ethical cultural continuity.
Therefore,
our goal is to target as our audiences, students, children and families and
to instill in them the pride of their artistic heritage and awareness of
centuries old, deeply held beliefs & cultural values. Our exhibitions
have received critical acclaim from the public and scholars alike and appeared
in eight national publications and on numerous television shows.
Mainstream art and archeology museums in the United States, even
those with extraordinary works of African art, rarely understand or exploit
the full depth of meaning inherent in their collections as cultural icons
representing the ancestral practices of Americans of African descent. Bigham
and Associates is determined to fill this void. Consequently, Bigham and Associates
exhibits will be shown in spaces most accessible to the public like libraries,
schools, airports, Black museums and cultural centers. "We as Africans should
make it our responsibility to tell our own story and not wait and depend
on other people." Mr. Bigham emphasizes.
Currently three Bigham and Associates exhibitions are traveling.
The Majesty of African Motherhood comprises over 70 mother and child images
of superb artistic and cultural merit in wood, bronze and photography, and
African Sculpture: Symbols of Culture is a compact exhibition of historically
powerful masks, animal and human figures, and objects of healing and spirituality
and the Symbolic Use of Animals
Exhibit.
