Christina Molieri
An exhibition of Christina M. Molieri's photography is featured this month at the October Gallery, and debuted as a highlight of August's First Friday. Molieri, a Philly native, is a Temple photojournalism student who has spent the past highlighted events setting up her work in the empty lot at Elfreth's Alley on Second Street, and from the size of crowds gathered along the sidewalk observing and purchasing her black and white photographs. It seems as though the starving artist can survive in the 21st century.
Molieri blurs the lines between documentary and fine art, a true "crossover" of the medium, and her subjects range from sleeping homeless men on a winter sidewalk to high definition clear contrasted images that beckon you nearer with their full range of tonal explosions.
"Sometimes people ask me how I do it; which lens I used, what angle I shot this one from, where I took that picture; and most of the time those are the pictures I just shoot. There isn't really a how or why most of the time. They just happen. I try not to question it too much. I leave the questions for my audience to ask themselves while they are observing."
In addition to this exhibition, Christina M. Molieri has completed two full length books -- one a documentary that focuses on the stereotypes associated with the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered) Community, and the other a satirical view as Philadelphia's citizens. She is also a local activist as well as president of Temple University's Lambda Student Alliance.
