Back to images Samuel R. Byrd Born in Philadelphia, PA Attended Overbrook High School and the Philadelphia College of Art Samuel Byrd has loved and created art since childhood. He is a realistic artist whose work expresses his personal experiences and innermost thoughts and feelings. “Art is my life’s blood. My art reflects my moods and is my vehicle for communicating with the world! To me, empty walls of a room are synonymous with empty dreams and non-fulfillment. Art immortalizes my soul! Mr. Byrd is the illustrator of eight children’s books published by Holiday House. They are: Dancing with the Indians, (A Reading Rainbow Book), A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman, (also a Reading Rainbow Book), Let Freedom Ring, A Picture Book of Fredrick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Sitting Bull, Running for Our Lives and A Picture Book of Marian Anderson. Samuel Byrd has exhibited his work nationally. Samuel Byrd has designed and painted many murals around the city of Philadelphia. He has been commissioned by the YMCA, FILA USA, Planned Parenthood, Champ’s Graphics, and ED TECH to create posters, portraits, murals, brochures, and book illustrations. The city of Philadelphia commissioned Samuel Byrd to paint a mural of Patti Labelle with looms proudly on the walls of the Mantua section of the city. Mr. Byrd is the creator of the official poster of the Million Woman March held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 25, 1997. He is a diverse artist who utilizes the abstract as well as realism to express himself. He is especially known for his pencil drawings as well as his usage of acrylic and watercolors. He is a founding member of the Mixed Media art group. This group is comprised of native Philadelphia artists Cal Massey, Dane Tilghman, Raymond Holman, Dressler Smith, and Robert Jefferson. Their mission is to mentor and provide tutelage and scholarships to young artists while giving the world the prized possession of beautiful art! Back to images |
